How do you qualify for an EB-1A visa?

On Behalf of | Dec 17, 2025

If you possess extraordinary ability in your field, then you may qualify for an EB-1A visa. This visa is highly restrictive, meaning that it can be difficult to obtain, but if you’re successful in obtaining it then it can be a great way to work towards permanent residency in the United States. One of the biggest advantages of the EB-1A visa application process is that you can sponsor yourself and self-petition, even without any kind of job offer being in place. But before you submit your documentation for consideration, you have to understand what it takes to be successful.

Since the EB-1A visa is highly selective, you’ll have to be careful in choosing the information you submit to the government and how you portray yourself and your abilities. Here are some tips that might prove helpful if you decide to pursue this visa type:

  • Demonstrate that you’ve received some sort of major award that has worldwide recognition in your field.
  • Show that you’re a member of an organization or association that requires major accomplishments in your area of work.
  • Highlight any material you’ve generated that’s been published.
  • List any artistic exhibitions at which your work has been displayed.
  • Show that you’ve had extensive commercial success in your line of work.
  • Demonstrate the leadership positions that you’ve held and continue to hold.
  • Paint a picture of the type of income that you’re able to command compared to others.

While a major award alone may qualify you for an EB-1A visa, in most instances you’ll have to show that several of these characteristics exist in order to stand a chance of securing the visa, typically 3 out of 10 identified factors. But don’t let that daunt you to the point that you don’t try, as this may be viable option for you.

Do you need help seeking a visa?

If you do, then now may be the best time to discuss your circumstances with an immigration attorney who is experienced in this area of the law. By doing so, you may be able to find a path forward that maximizes your chances of securing the outcome that you want.
